Here are their class exam tips for those sitting these exams or others in the future:

• Wear your school uniform to set yourself to school mode.
• Sleep well before your tests – go to bed a little earlier than usual.
• Eat a good breakfast.
• The earlier the tests, the sooner they are over!
• Try not to over-think it.
• Check over your work.
• Try your best.
• Read the questions carefully.
• Work harder questions worth more marks.
• Don’t spend too long on a question, go back at the end to re-try.
• Do something fun after the tests to celebrate and have something to look forward to.
• There is always a school for you out there.
• And…….. RELAX!

“Always support your friends, too!” AR added and finally LF finished, saying “don’t stop believing in you!”

All the secondary/middle/high schools have an entrance exam to Year 7 that the children must sit to be accepted. It is a tough time, with lots of decisions to be made, but we are always proud that our children prepare well,  work hard and always do their very best.

Each day after lunch, the children pair up together to explore and read their “just right” classroom levelled reading books.  First, they read them to themselves and then they read them to their partner.  Each day a child also gets chosen to read their book out-loud to the whole class.  I’m so proud of their amazing progress and their increase in confidence when sounding out unfamiliar words.  What an amazing Kindergarten class!

To compliment their success Year 3 created a rap to remind us of how important it is to recycle.

After much discussion, Year 3 have decided to put their extra ‘Golden Time’ towards a trip to our local Sandwich Shop where they will be able to create their own ‘healthy and delicious’ wrap (or rap!) or salad to eat for lunch. This relates really well to their ‘Healthy Eating’ topic in Science and their Design and Technology project of designing and making their own ‘healthy treat’. How excitingly scrumptious is that!

The JKs love getting their parents involved in their learning so their home activity was to make something using recycled materials. At a special show and tell, each child brought in their project and explained what it was and how it was used.  Click on ‘Read more…’ to see lots of photos.

We also held an Earth Open House. We invited other classes into our room and the JKs talked about their recycling projects.

The children enjoyed learning about what they can do to reduce the amount of trash that we use each day and now they bring in Tupperware containers that can be washed and reused, instead of foil and sandwich bags.

If you have any old pots (even old boots) you would like to donate to the school, our preschoolers would be overjoyed and will take great pleasure in planting some flowers and herbs in them!

Each child was given a salt water fuel- cell car kit to assemble and then they added salt water to watch their cars race. After about 10 minutes the cars begin to slow down and all they needed to do was add more salt water and the would start up again.

What a great classroom project to learn about a potentially new way to fuel cars and they could even test different ratios of salt to see which mixture yields the greatest efficiency.
Who knew the solution to our energy needs was a simple as a trip to the beach.

Their intentions are that all snack\lunch recyclable refuse will be taken home to be washed and placed in the brown bin located at the school entrance, in the mornings as you come into school. Other household recyclables can also be brought from home.

To encourage and entice your participation,  they have created tally sheets for each class to record the number of objects placed in the bin. These tallies will be counted up each week and the class who collects the most tallies at the end of the month will receive a special ‘Recycle Certificate’ which will entitle the class to an extra ‘Golden Time’.

Well done, School Council.  I wonder which class will collect the most recyclables this month?  We look forward to an update on this fantastic initiative later in the term.

As part of their science topic on ‘Friction’, the children were challenged to create a parachute that reduced the speed that their character fell. After much planning, head-scratching and problem solving, they were ready to test their inventions. Some groups created traditional parachutes while others chose a hand-glider design. Both ideas worked well, and it was clear that the resistance between the parachute and the warm Provo air worked perfectly to keep our little wooden volunteers safe!

Back in class, we watched how air resistance could be observed in other demonstrations. With the help of nothing more than air, we made two identical pieces of paper fall at different speeds. It was even possible to snap an old ruler with nothing more than a sheet of paper and a lot of air resistance! Who knew that the air around us could be so strong?!

In Spanish lessons in years 5 and 6, we’ve been learning about how to order food in a restaurant.  Using Spanish menus we created ourselves, we practised and performed a role play, in which we played waiters and customers at eating establishments that serve all our favourite dishes!  On Earth Day for the past 3 years, The Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association has organised a ‘TCI Shines Earth Day Clean- up Campaign’.  Donning gloves and raring to play their part, the children in years 3 – 6 collected rubbish outside the school perimeter fencing, around the TCIFA soccer field and up to the Graceway Sports Centre. The children in Years 1 and 2 collected litter from around the school playground.

The children filled approximately 30 large trash bags in total – almost all with rubbish collected from outside the school grounds.  The photo on the left shows the children with just a few of these bags.  The children were upset to have found so much rubbish that people had littered in our area, but felt happy that they had helped clean up their surroundings.
