The Foundation Stage - 3-5 years.

Junior-Kindergarten

Our Junior Kindergarten (JK) programme welcomes children who turn 4 by August of the current school year. For example if a child is 3 when they start in JK, they must turn 4 before the next school year commences. We also take into consideration a child’s developmental age, which can sometimes be quite different. In this case, a recommended placement will be fully discussed with the parent/s of that particular child.

The day begins at 8.30am and ends at 3:00pm. There is also an optional half-day JK programme, which ends at 12:00 noon.

Children are introduced to a range of pre reading, writing and number activities. The emphasis is on learning for meaning and enjoyment and we very much believe that children learn best through playing, investigating and doing. Children are introduced to Letterland and Jolly Phonics songs, games and rhymes. By the end of JK, most children are familiar with letter sounds, are able to recognize and write the symbol for their name and in some cases write their whole name, count with understanding and to recognize that numbers are used to represent their counting.

A main component of the JK school day is the plan, do, review approach adapted from the high scope curriculum.

PLAN
During circle time, activities are introduced and children are asked to which centre they would like to go and what they are planning to do there.

DO
Whilst at the centres the children are involved in a variety of activities. It is the teacher’s role to extend upon the child’s natural curiosity and encourage them to look and learn further.

REVIEW
At the end of the session children come together and discuss what they have done. This is a very important part of high scope, which allows the teachers to assess what the children have learnt and where to help them go next.

All children should bring with them plenty of water to drink, a healthy snack including at least one serving of fruit and vegetables and a packed lunch if staying all day. They should also bring a change of clothes. Children should not bring candies, chocolate, sodas to school and are discouraged from bringing any “junk food”
