Social Studies - History and Geography

'Social Studies (Geography and History) fires pupil's curiosity about the past and present, and about local places and the wider world. It considers how the past influences the present, what past societies were like, how these societies were organized, their politics, and what beliefs and cultures influenced people's actions. It develops knowledge of places and environments throughout the world.'
(The British National Curriculum, 1999)

Living on a small group of islands with a rich historical past provides the children the opportunity to explore and experience the people, events and cultural beliefs that have influenced our current society.

Field trips play a key role when studying local history and geography. In early KS2, flield trips focus on the island of Providenciales. Trips to Cheshire Hall, help the children to learn first hand about the cotton industry.
In later KS2, classes travel to Grand Turk and visit the TC Museum and local historical sites. They also travel to North Caicos to visit the cotton plantation, Wades Green, and to Middle Caicos to study the cave formations.

We intergrate the Turks and Caicos Social Studies curriculum guidelines into the British National Curriculum, extending ideas and views to develop knowledge of history, places and environments throughout the world.
