What is 'Greening our Schools'?
The "Greening Our Schools" awards programme in the Turks and Caicos Islands aims to foster environmental awareness and sustainability within educational institutions. Launched by the Department of Education in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR), the initiative encourages schools to integrate environmental management into their curricula and daily practices.
The "Greening Our Schools" initiative represents a significant step towards embedding environmental stewardship within the educational framework of the Turks and Caicos Islands, aiming to develop environmentally literate citizens who actively contribute to a sustainable future.
How do schools participate?
Schools participate by focusing on one of four themes:
- Waste Management,
- Electricity Conservation,
- Water Conservation,
- Biodiversity.
They implement projects addressing these themes, with the goal of creating practical, eco-friendly solutions for their schools and communities. Successful schools can earn the "Green Flag" designation, symbolising their commitment to sustainability, while the top-performing school receives the prestigious "Green Ribbon" award.
